2025 Kitchen Trends

Each year, Houzz offers a kitchen trends report. The 2025 report is compiled from the results of a survey completed by 1,620 United States homeowners about a recent or planned kitchen renovation.

Key Take-Aways

Kitchen > Dining Room

Thirty-five percent of homeowners deduct from their dining room square footage to enlarge their kitchen. Whether due to the lack of a sufficient dining space to cut into or some other reason, 18% opt to build additional square footage to create a larger kitchen. What do they do with that new space? Fifty-eight percent of them either add an island or enlarge it. For those who upgrade to a larger island, 52% of them made theirs at least 7 feet long.

Spend It if You Got It

The median cost of a major high-end kitchen renovation is $60,000, but the top 10% of homeowners are spending $180,000 or more. For a minor kitchen renovation, homeowners spend between $20,000 and $67,000.

Narrow the Focus

If a kitchen renovation is something you want to chip away at rather than take out a second mortgage to fund, same. Focus on just one or two eye-catching things for a more budget-friendly spruce-up.

Some Things Stay the Same

As we’ve told you before, the designers we work most closely with almost always defer to subway tile for a backsplash. Nationally, the trend remains the same, with 68% of homeowners choosing the same. Two in five of them also prefer a classic brick pattern installation.

Traditional Makes a Comeback

The farmhouse style continues to decline while traditional has taken a significant jump. Shaker is the preferred door style at 61% with flat panel coming in at a distant 22%. White cabinets remain the top choice among color options.

About the Flooring …

Since we’re primarily a flooring store, we’d be remiss to not take time to delve into the foundation of any kitchen: the floor.

The top three flooring choices for homeowners are vinyl, hardwood, and tile at 22%, 21%, and 20%, respectively. This is the first time in a long while that hardwood hasn’t been the first choice. We have seen that trend for a while now with many of our clients who choose to replace their kitchen floor going with a luxury vinyl product.

Regarding the choice of color for flooring, 46% preferred wood tones in a break down of 20% light wood, 24% medium wood, and 2% dark wood. Can we just tell you this: avoid shiny dark wood flooring if you have pets. Every spec of dust and hair is obvious.
